Strike Magazine Tallahassee

Organization: Strike Magazine is the largest student-run fashion and culture publication in the nation, located across 13 different cities and counting. Each publication produces semesterly print issues and digital content and operates independently.

Situation: After standing out during my first semester as a writer with Strike by writing the most articles in the magazine, I decided to apply to be Writing director. The website for Strike had started during my first semester and there had only been a handful of posts with limited page views. Additionally, the attention in the magazine was more on the visuals, the articles had been treated prior as an after thought. I saw the potential and decided to be the one to enact change.

Impact: I oversaw the production of 120 blog articles and 27 pieces in our print issues. There was an uptick in both the size of the writing staff, the content produced both on the print issues and blog, and there was an increase to our website’s page views with 14k visits, 11k unique visitors, 27k page views, and the blog section being clicked on over 3k times. For the blog articles, I would meet with my team weekly and brainstorm timely content ideas and they would have a week to write them before they would go live. I would also coordinate with the Art Director for cover art and the Social Media Director to promote the pieces. For the magazine content, I would meet with the EIC and pitch her pieces that either were on theme or could accompany a photoshoot. I pushed for both timely themed pieces as well as a range of genres, leading to the magazine publishing creative writing pieces for the first time. Overall, this was my first real time of being a positive disruptor and I was instantly hooked. This experience lead me down the path I am on today by making me a better writer, better editor, better manager, and better leader.
