Strike Magazine Tallahassee

Organization: Strike Magazine is the largest student-run fashion and culture publication in the nation, located across 13 different cities and counting. Each publication produces semesterly print issues and digital content and operates independently. The first chapter of Strike was founded in Tallahassee.

Situation: After diligently working for the publication for two years and revamping the writing team, I had the opportunity to rise in the ranks and become Editor-in-Chief. I came in with the goal to create opportunities for our staff to execute more creative photo/video shoots in both our print issues, expanding our staff and our following, formulate a strict schedule and responsibilities for each position, and leave the staff in the position to continue to positively evolve after I graduate. The pandemic was at its height when I was starting, this meant that I needed to factor in remote working, backups and backups for the backups in case individuals needed to quarantine, stay up to date with the latest safety recommendations and enforce them, and accelerate our timeline for the fall issue by two weeks. We also had no money going into the first semester, this highly affected what kind projects we could take on.

Impact: Our staff produced close to 200 online pieces, double the amount of creative content related to our two print issues, expanded our staff to 150+ and our offerings as well as our following, churned a profit through planning more share-it nights, merchandise drops, and selling magazines as well as ad placements in our issues. Through careful planning, frequent check-ins with my teams, setting high standards for the content we produced, and leaving the next Editor-in-Chief with funds, I was able to leave the publication in a better place set up for success. This experience has left me with a great understanding of the creative process from both a manager and a creative perspective. I have a new sense of confidence and determination that I have since brought to every project I work on.
